Alec LaMaida  |  October 13, 2025

The wait is over! Mote SEA, the long-anticipated science education aquarium in Sarasota’s University Town Center, officially opened to the public on October 8, 2025. After a sneak peek for members, the facility is now welcoming visitors of all ages to explore Florida’s marine life and STEM-inspired exhibits.

We first shared a sneak peek of Mote SEA before it opened — now the aquarium is officially welcoming the public!

A Landmark for Education and Fun:

Mote SEA is not just an aquarium — it’s an educational hub. With projections of 700,000 annual visitors and 70,000 students taking advantage of educational programs, the aquarium promises to inspire curiosity about marine science in both children and adults.

The three-story, 110,000-square-foot facility features immersive exhibits like the Gulf of Mexico habitat, where visitors can get up close with manatees, fish, and sharks swimming overhead. Guests can also enjoy penguin habitats, interactive books, and hands-on displays that make learning about marine life engaging and fun.

Ribbon Cutting and Community Excitement:

The ribbon cutting on October 3 brought together local dignitaries, including U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, Florida Sen. Jim Boyd, and Sarasota County Commissioner Mike Rahn. The event celebrated years of planning, construction, and dedication by the Mote team, architect TVS Design, and builders Willis Smith Construction and Whiting-Turner.

“This is a top-notch marine research facility that will elevate tourism in the region,” Commissioner Rahn said.

Fun Facts About Mote SEA:

  • $132 million facility, with Sarasota County contributing $20M and Manatee County $5M

  • 1 million gallons of water fill the exhibits

  • 12-acre lot with three stories of marine exploration

  • 380 auger cast pilings, 80 feet deep, support the facility

  • 6,800 exterior metal panels and massive acrylic habitat windows (up to 27,900 lbs)

  • 400,000 gallons in the Gulf of Mexico habitat alone

Educational Impact:

State College of Florida President Tommy Gregory highlighted the aquarium’s transformative role in education, stating it will provide hands-on experiences for K–12 students, college faculty, and the broader community.
